SSL (Secure Sockets Layer)
SSL is short for Secure Sockets Layer, a protocol developed by
Netscape for transmitting private documents via the Internet. SSL works by using
a public key to encrypt data that's transferred over the SSL connection. Both
Netscape Navigator and Internet Explorer support SSL, and many Web sites use
the protocol to obtain confidential user information, such as credit card numbers
or other financial or sensitive information.
By convention, URLs that require an SSL connection start with
https instead of http. SSL creates a secure connection between a client
and a server, over which any amount of data can be sent securely. SSL protocol
has been approved by the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) as a standard.
If you need to use SSL for secure pages
of your web site, let us know and we will send you the URL of a shared SSL certificate
you can use for FREE at no extra cost, as well as instructions about how to address it in your scripts.
For security reasons we do not publish the actual URL's on our web site. The
shared SSL URL's are different depending upon which server your account is on
at 1-2-Wonder. The URL that people will see when filling out information at
the secure pages will NOT be the same as your web site.
If you prefer to have your own SSL certificate installed for your
domain, you must have one of our Premium-level*
accounts. The premium accounts have a private (static) IP and a chained SSL
certificate with 128-bit encryption installed on your server space, with a URL
of https://www.yourdomain.com. This can sometimes be the difference between completing
a sale or not, since some people are uneasy if they are directed to an unrelated
URL (even if it is secure) to fill out their credit card information. Additionally,
SSL certificates on Premium accounts are chained and do not require you to upload
separate copies of your secure pages and scripts to another server. All you
have to do is address the secure URL in your scripts.
*Premium-level
accounts: All paid hosting packages of Starter Package level or higher can be upgraded to Premium-level for
an extra $10.00 per month. SSL certificates by themselves (excluding hosting
or private IP's) usually average well over $200/year, but we get a price break
on chained SSL certificates and pass that savings on to you, even spreading
out the cost by a monthly instead of yearly charge.
