Nearly all other hosting companies oversell. We do not. Not EVER.
Overselling is selling more disk space or bandwidth per hosting account than actual capacity on the server, with the expectation that most people will never actually come close to using their full quotas. So a hosting company that oversells can sell at least 10 or even 100 times the amount of space and bandwidth PER SERVER than each server is actually capable of handling. This is how hosting companies can offer huge amounts of space and bandwidth for extremely low prices. This practice allows many accounts per server, keeping expenses down and cranking profits way up, and making it LOOK like there is all this space and bandwidth available to every account. There is not.
It is similar to an airline overselling plane tickets. If a flight is oversold and all passengers with paid-for tickets show up, then some passengers get involuntarily bumped to another flight. However, this cannot be done with hosting servers. All it takes is a handful of accounts on an oversold server coming close to their quotas, and the whole server becomes unstable. This affects not just the web sites that exceed quotas, but every web site on the server is affected. At the very least, overselling results in frequent sluggish, bogged-down performance and brief "hiccups" in which the server chokes while it tries to keep up with demand. Ultimately, overselling can result in downtime of at least several hours or even days at a time.
Consider the odds: The more accounts on a server, the more likely it is that on a very regular basis at least a handful of them will exceed their quotas.
"But the cheaper big guys still guarantee 99% uptime!" Sure. There are 720 hours in a 30-day month. 99% uptime means every site is down at least 7.2 hours per month. Is that really good enough for you? How many customers or clients can you afford to lose during 86.4 hours of downtime every year?
1-2-Wonder does not believe in gambling with customers' web sites that way. When we get to about 35% disk space allotted on any server, we add a new server. Although it means FAR fewer accounts per server, it allows plenty of room for upgrades and/or spikes without ever coming anywhere close to server capacity. This also keeps each server running faster, period.
